Mcguffey First [Sixth] Eclectic Reader William Holmes McGuffey 9781150909078 Books
As a brand new homeschooling mom I was terrified of trying to teach my 6 year old daughter how to read. I tried phonics books, which helped with sounding words out, but didn't really allow her to read beyond one or two words. I'm a very big believer in doing things the old fashioned way and I stumbled upon this book and thought I'd try it. The lessons start very simply and allow the student to build their confidence in reading as they progress. My daughter is reading very well and loves working through this book. It has taken much stress off of me as I worried about teaching her to love reading as much as we do. You will not be disappointed with this book!Product details

Mcguffey First [Sixth] Eclectic Reader William Holmes McGuffey 9781150909078 Books Reviews
This was first printed in 1836, and we are still using it today WOW!
I use this in my classes to teach reading and printing to my students.
Of course, it taches reading writing, and, believe it or not, ethics and morality.
My use of this test hsd been very successful with my students,.
My grandchildren enjoy also.
Great quality. I use these as part of my homeschool curriculum, McGuffy has so much content and they teach moral lessons. It's neat to observe the historical differences between then and now. We go slow and re-read the stories and talk through through comprehending the content. It's a great value.
I would be willing to bet that few US high school grads are up to the level of understanding contained in this book for 6th graders of 100+ years ago. This reader also has many essays and stories that show our country's accomplishments and fundamental strengths. I doubt that many students today ever have a chance to read them.
My 8 year old son, like many boys, is not a "natural" reader. So we have tried many different book styles to improve his ability and confidence. The McGuffy series was recommended by a schoolmate's mom so I ordered a couple to see if they could help. Because the lessons all start with a review of words and word sounds, the reading is smoother. The lessons are also quite short, often without an ending of an event being described, so it provides an opportunity to have the child create an ending which helps develop descriptive writing skills. We will soon be moving to the McGuffy Second Reader which builds nicely on the foundations set by this book. MoniK
I am only going to review this one book for all of the McGuffey readers, so I can withhold from writing 6 different reviews.
My readers came pretty quickly and I ordered the box set of 7 books.
These are fantastic! I home school my children and they use these for reading, phonics and copywork. The pictures are in black and white but still beautiful. The level of reading goes up to high school, however, I imagine that a lot of adults could not read what is in the last reader with understanding. It has timeless quotes from our forefathers, Shakespeare, prose, many forms of poetry.
I highly recommend these if you want your children to become great readers or if they love to read already.
Book is reformatted from original text making reading impossible. The original pictures are missing and replaced by crude descriptions. Supposed to be used for teaching reading but in the form is is useless.
Printing quality was excellent. When I was a child at a private school back in the 1970s they used the original McGuffey's. Even then I wanted one I thought they were so great. Children love the stories. I love the "slate work" showing the time period from where it came. To me this looks almost identical to the original except the front cover was printed ever so slightly crooked, not very noticeable though and there is a barcode on the back, not surprising for out time. I highly recommend these great books for children today. I tried to buy an original from the time period years ago at an auction and I stopped when it hit $300. Overall a great price and a quality product.
