Because this biography was written by the actual Law man, who personally knew Billy The Kid and then hunted him down and killed him, for that alone this book should be read by anyone interested in the story of The Kid. But, based on later, we’ll researched biographies, a great deal of the historical facts about Billy’s life and the circumstances and crimes he was involved in are inaccurate and/or questionable. Keep in mind Pat Garrett was a law man, not a historian, and he himself was likely recording the stories of The Kid which were being circulated by the public, or in some cases, perhaps even told to Garrett by Billy or people who knew him. If you want a historically accurate biography read Robert M. Utley’s biography on Billy The Kid. But, this book is a great read because the author personally knew The Kid, and he speaks as a cowboy and law man and it is very clear that Garrett had tremendous respect for Billy’s reputation as a gun man and one of the deadliest outlaws of his era. What is fascinating to me is how Garrett interpreted the reasons for why Billy did what he did, while later historians see it very different because of letters and court documents and statements from friends of Billy’s later reveal. This is a wonderful book, despite the historical inaccuracies, and should be read as supplemental reading by anyone wanting to learn about The Kid, however, if you want to read a much more accurate historical biography on Billy The Kid, read Robert M. Utley’s book titled “Billy The Kid, A short and Violent Life.”Product details

The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid eBook Pat Garrett Reviews
I enjoyed this book a lot, mostly due to the fact it was written by the man who killed Billy the Kid. Pat Garrett chronicles the early days of Billys' life and how he became the man he was. It was frustrating to read here and there because of the writing style of the author, but it is a very good book all in all. I recommend it to anyone interested in the life of the Kid, why some hated him and others would do anything for him. He was only 21 years old when Pat Garrett ended his life literally inches from him in a dark bedroom.
It comes across as a true record of both Garrett's and the Kid's activities from 1860-1881. While being engaging and descriptive occasionally it diverts off the subject. The reader feels immersed in the trail dust, wind and hears the horse hooves struggle over the mountain passes. Recommended for those earnestly interested in William Bonney alias Billy the Kid.
This book was not very popular in the 1800s, and a reader finds out why within a few pages. It's a complimentary and even affectionate view of Billy the Kid. History tells us they were friends originally, but Sheriff Pat Garrett eventually shot and killed him. The book doesn't ring really true. It was easy to put down.
This is a matter of fact recounting of the author's interaction with and legal killing of Billy called the Kid. It is somewhat wordy. Toward the end, the author gets cheesed at some of his detractors which, IMHO, detracts from the author and his book. Well, it only costs $ .99. Meh
As old as this book is, the main point is who wrote it. It is a first hand account that was written while emotions were still hot. Garrett had as many enemies as friends, and the fact that he killed a larger than life figure did not help him. Still I believe that his story rings true as do the other people that knew the "Kid", and wrote of their experience of him. It's as true as it gets and I enjoyed the read.
Newspaper writers and editors may have never met, spoke to or interviewed the " Kid. "
At least Marshall Garrett spent copious time with him to hear much of his life story.
Very well written. I truly enjoyed the e-tonebook. I am amused that hollyweed used
the tone and mannerisms in the "Young Guns " movies. I believe I will finish the game.
Since Billy the Kid is one of the most familiar figures of the Old West, featured in countless books, magazine and newspaper articles, television shows, and movies, one wonders the truth of his short yet noteworthy life. When I went to look for books on the subject (after watching Howard Hughes old movie starring Jane Russell) I was surprised to find a biography of Billy the Kidd written by Pat Garrett, the man responsible for Billy's death at age 21. I ordered the book along with a newer biography, just to see what the lawmen had to say about the young firebrand he killed. Surprisingly, Garrett uses very flattering words in describing Billy, both as a young child, and even after he began his life on the other side of the law. A challenge in reading the book is the language of the nineteenth century, particularly in the west. There are unfamiliar words, words that have changed in meaning, and a tendency to flowery verbose language, including inset poetic quotations. However, the book was informative on several levels. I would not consider it a definitive source, but the book certainly serves as a valuable perspective on the life of Billy the Kid, a controversial figure of the Old West. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Old West of the late nineteenth century as an enlightening albeit a bit challenging read.
