Quinn Donahue will do anyone once, so when Aaron Miller spots Quinn making his moves in a Vancouver gay bar, Aaron thinks he's found just the guy to relieve him of his unwanted virginity. Quinn, however, has apparently decided to make an exception to his usual open-bed policy. He may be an unrepentant connoisseur of one-night stands, but he's not going to disappoint a sweet kid like Aaron by giving him a hot night and then leaving while the sheets are still warm.
After Quinn takes a job at Aaron's family horse farm, Aaron spots both the demons and the decency that drive Quinn's frequent brush-offs, and it makes Aaron want him even more. But Quinn is determined that Aaron won't go home with a man who doesn't deserve him, so he starts sending likely candidates Aaron's way. It takes a grim act of sacrifice for Aaron to realize exactly why Quinn's been so skittish, and he’ll have to keep a firm grip on the man of his dreams to keep Quinn from shying away.

This book had a lot of elements I should have enjoyed, the equestrian centre setting; the set-up between shy, inexperienced Aaron and the more worldly Quinn, and yes, parts of it were fine. However, Aaron's family -- ewwww. Aaron's father is supposed to be a social worker (I do say supposed to be), who has no qualms about sourcing and using confidential legal information for his own private interests, and that of his family. If I was Quinn I would have run a mile from this supposedly squeaky clean, nice family. Records are confidential for a reason, a social worker with ethics and experience would know and respect this (and know the damage they can do -- I've seen one instance of this supposed do-gooder meddling in real life and it ended in suicide for the person whose information was leaked). So, these actions coloured the whole book for me. Aaron's family, at least his father and mother -- are scary to me, in their casual use (mis-use) of information they have no right to know or use. And worse they do it under the guise of doing the right thing.
Quinn's family are definitely 'off' particularly in the way their relate to Quinn after all that has happened, but even they didn't give me the 'ewww' factor that Aaron's mother and father did.
Run Quinn, run!

Shying Away edition by Kate Sherwood Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was the most well-written book in this genre I've ever had the pleasure of reading. The emotions between the leading men were heartfelt and real. Though the sexual moments weren't abundant, they were perfectly placed, believable, and succeeded at furthering the depth and progression of the relationship between Aaron and Quinn. Nothing felt rushed. The timing was flawless. Everything about this book was, though. I cannot recommend this one enough if you are a fan of M/M romances. It's beautiful!
A good story about having your first time with someone you love. Their were more stuff going on than I thought. And touching in (almost) every way.
Quinn does not realize he has anything to offer anyone but sex. The whole book centers around his distructive behavior until Aaron appears in his world. Aaron is the steady calm in the world. Aaron knows he is gay but is 22 yrs old and a virgin. He has decided to lose his virginity to Quinn. The process to do that leads them both to love they needed in their life. However, I do agree with another comment that the Quinn family issue came on too strong and almost as an afterthought and I had no feelings for the family at all. If you want a nice M/M romance this is a must read.
As she has demonstrated in her Dark Horse series and other books, Kate Sherwood knows horses, and more importantly, knows people who know and love horses. That she is able to weave tales around men who also wind up loving each other in a horsey milieu is a huge bonus.
This plot, and its characters, could have gone in several directions. The one it, and they, take is totally unexpected, and when not-quite-whore Quinn meets up with not-quite-ready Aaron in a Vancouver bar the sparks fly but the fire smolders. It's only when Quinn incongruously applies for and gets a job at Aaron's family farm that the sticks start rubbing again.
What makes this book sizzle is Quinn's refusal to discuss his life before Aaron, and Aaron's refusal to let Quinn off the hook. Beneath it all is the development of a family history on both sides which will in some ways surprise you, and in other ways baffle you, but never leave you less than entertained. Nice.
This was a really sweet romance between two guys who are just perfect for one another. Aaron is a twenty-two year old trying to find someone to help him get rid of his unwanted virginity. Quinn is an older and much more experienced guy who thrives on one night stands. The initial meeting between these two is full of sexual tension and also hints at something beyond physical attraction which is increased when Quinn gets a job working for Aaron's family.
Most of this story involves Aaron and Quinn circling around each other while dealing with their own personal issues. It did get a bit frustrating when Quinn continued to push Aaron aside especially when his feelings were so obvious. But, once the author revealed Quinn's past, things started to make sense and I found myself really rooting for these guys to stick together. I've never read anything by Kate Sherwood, but I will definitely be looking for more of her work in the future.
I had just reread the very intense Nowhere Ranch and so I have to say I while I enjoyed this book, it wasn't as strong/powerful as Nowhere ranch and so it lost a star. I like working class men, I like books about men and horses, and I liked the family setting. I just found the revelation of Quinn's secrets to be a bit too heavy handed, and didn't really care about that resolution all that much.
I did however adore the virginal Aaron and liked all this thought processes (is Quinn like a dominant horse or a skittish horse? can he apply tactics from either horse to getting him closer...) I enjoyed them together, and the sexual tension was nicely executed.
So an enjoyable book, 4992 locations, but not one to obsess on afterwards. I was happy spending time with them but forgot about it pretty quickly, and had too look at my notes to remind me what the book was about.
When the story first starts, I did not think is was going to be a great story.. bad boy uses new guy to the scene... the "usual" story, but it was not when as the pages unfold the story reverses and the longing begins. I loved the fact this story took time to read and was not compressed into a few pages and there was a story with some history behind it. Great read and I will seek this author again.
